Kutaisi

Sainted by the storm of the previous journey (see the last blogpost) we explored the city of Kutaisi in the evening. After a soup at the green bazaar we felt fearless and unstoppable. So we climbed up the misty mountains around the city to a famous church and ancient ruins. Though as the day had been exhausting, we went to get some Khinkali for dinner and returned to our hostel to get some sleep.

The next day we felt alive and strong once more. To have another perfect day us two dreamers left for the Prometheus caves. Turns out we had to embrace a vagabonds life to get there. Welcome to the circus of the Georgian transportation system. The first people we asked for the journey to the cave looked at us like we were crazy, mad, insane. However, thanks to our power of will and the kindness of locals we found a bus and a marshrutka to the town of Tskaltubo. From there it was still miles and miles to the caves, yet we decided to walk under the sun. Well, the sunshine was missing. Nevertheless we had the best time walking out in the fields plucking fresh khakis from the trees. My apology to the farmers. In between we also met a lot of friendly cows, dogs, pigs, chicken and sheep. In the end we’ve reached the cave. Entering those felt like stepping through the gates of times into the realm of the king of shadows. Officially you have to march along with a guide through the world of stalactites and stalagmites (stalagmites have an m in the middle). But addicted to the empire of the waterfalls made out of stone, we fell behind and walked to the bottom of the cave basically on our own. The place looks like a scene straight from the bard song, perfect for the fairies dance. Oceandeep was the black of the holes where the princess of the night rules while giant halls felt like the place to be dancing with the dead. May it be that our imagination got the better of us? Possibly.

In a perfect world we would have been taken back to Kutaisi by a nice tourist group with a guide, who would tell us everything about the sights on the way, and could you believe it? This is exactly what happened. With more time in our hands than we expected to have in the day we ventured to new horizons. Following the great river, we found a magnificent dam. We crossed it and made our way back into the west. As it was already after dark and we were tired of the day, we decided to go back to the hostel. Most people were out to drink, but we still played several rounds of Uno with two Italians.

We are now on our way to Tbilisi, so the story ain’t over and the road goes on.

This blogpost is littered with song titles of some of our favourite bands and some beautiful movie scores. And also because we couldn’t not do it, one Harry Potter quote (who knows what it is?). Now just to add one last song: see you soon.

Quoting: Powerwolf, Amaranthe, Ad Infinitum, Richard Armitage & the dwarf cast, Lord of the Lost, Mono Inc, Tungsten, A Life Divided, five finger death punch, Dynazty, Nicholas Hooper, Beast in Black, Stormseeker, Beartooth, Soulbound, Blind Guardian, the dark side of the moon, Alestorm, Howard shore, Avantasia, A. R. Rahman & the lord of the rings original London production.

Obviously a lot of bands we listen to on a daily basis are missing because the song titles aren’t in English and would thus be out of place here.
